Pro Bono

We greatly value pro bono projects, and encourage attorneys at all levels to bring in pro bono projects of their own interest, or volunteer for ongoing pro bono cases. In the past several years, approximately 7% of attorney time has been spent on pro bono matters.

In 2012, California Lawyer selected Keker & Van Nest Partners Dan Purcell and Eric MacMichael as the pro bono California Lawyers of the Year (CLAY). They were selected for dedicating approximately 1,000 hours to freeing Caramad Conley, who served 18 years for a double-murder conviction that a judge ruled was obtained through perjured testimony.

Our pro bono cases include:

defeating a challenge to the Berkeley School District’s desegregation plan
securing habeas corpus relief from the Ninth Circuit, and pursuing a civil rights claim
working with the ACLU as lead trial counsel on a case challenging racial profiling
securing asylum for political refugees
working with the Public Defender’s office in representing indigent criminal defendants
representing artists in intellectual property disputes
representing prisoners in civil rights litigation
